By guest speaker Professor Nigel Saul
This talk will begin with 1225, go onto the memorial stone in the Abbey ruins, and then focus mainly on 1700 to the present day. Professor Saul will look at the ways in which Magna Carta has been interpreted in the 19th and 20th centuries, and will suggest that there has been a shift of emphasis from seeing it as the foundation of the rule of law to a view that it lies at the heart of modern ideas of human rights.
Nigel Saul is Emeritus Professor of Medieval History at Royal Holloway, University of London, and in 2015 was a member of the Magna Carta 800th Anniversary Committee.
